Story:

The sun crept over the horizon, casting a warm, golden light across the verdant forest. Crows where cawing in the distance, and the air was thick with the scent of wildflowers. Nerwen, an elf girl with red hair like fire and emerald green eyes, stirred in her cabin, stretching lazily before yawning. She had spent the night tossing and turning, plagued by nightmares of an evil, mad king and his minions who were slowly destroying their beloved kingdom. As she sat up, she glanced at the ancient tome lying open on her bedside table. It was a journal kept by the late Keeper of the Forest, who had been slain by the mad king's forces just days before. The final entry, scribbled in desperation, spoke of the five magical crowns that had been hidden away for generations, each capable of stopping the king's reign of terror. Nerwen knew that she must find those crowns and use them to save their world. With a deep breath, she swung her legs out of bed and began to prepare for her long journey...

Hello you! Probably wondering what happened to the game? It's being reworked from the ground up on the newest version of GB-Studio, the old version didn't really survive the migration process. There will also be major changes to the game, scaling it down a little to a single island the size of Link's Awakening. Don't worry it will be chock-full of silly content like the original game.

Controls:

"W A S D" or the "arrow keys" to move around, "Z" or "NumPad Del" to interact with things, "Enter" or "NumPad Enter" to bring up the "Menu" and "X" or "NumPad 0" to go back in the menu.

On "Continue" you keep all your items and progress. In case you... "die" ;)

About the Game:

A "little" adventure/exploration/collectathon/classic "point & click" game without any "pointing and clicking" (Except the menus) I've been working on in GB Studio.

Known Bugs:

N/A

Change Log:

Alpha 0.2, Very basic, you can walk around and explore, there's a fast travel system (marked with anchors on the map). Only the bottom half of the map is accessible right now and you can't do much. The menu should work fine, for now it will let you know what part of the map you are on. You should be able to explore map 1, 2 and 6 100%, check the tracker in the menu. There's also a new map in the game that actually tracks your position in the overworld.

Is the current version available for download? I'd love to try it on a Gameboy, but there's only the web version on the page?

Nope, but you can download the prequel: "Wenny's Halloween Quest" It's on my page

Aw. Hope that'll change at some point. I'll check out Wenny for the time being though^^

looks great

I know this is a stupid question, but how did you make the character portraits appear on dialogue boxes?

It's a feature in GB-Studio 2.0 Beta5. "Text: Display Dialogue" has an option at the bottom for avatars.

Man it is a really nice game but I am stuck, I am sure I have explored the whole map and I can not find the damn kid! what am I doing wrong? is it the guy on the island?

There are only 9 places to search (for now), Maybe you missed something at the castle? If you watch the prologue you'll see what the prince looks like ;D

This game is looking amazing so far, especially the art! It's a wonderful style with some very cute poses on the characters.  I found it while looking for games that people have made with GBstudio to find inspiration for my own project. I look forward to seeing more of this!

I want to download the v1.2 rom, but the only download link gives me the v1.0 version. Could you help me?

The artwork in your games is an inspiration. I love the attention to detail and polish of the animation.

Can't find the link to download. Such a great game. :(

It only works in a browser, unless you mean the rom file? Thank you.

Yes, I meant the rom file.

You'll find a download button on the page now. :)

OMG! Thanks!

I found your game when I was looking for inspirations for GBJAM. I love the sprites animations. I am especially impressed by the shrinking and walking in water. I guess you just made the trees much better to give the impression of shrinking. But I have no idea how you make the effect of walking in water. Thanks for sharing the game. Keep up the work!!!

Yes the trees are just up-scaled so that 1 pixel is 4.For the water it's a simple trigger that changes the player sprite and speed when you touch the water, and changes it back when you touch land. Thank you for playing :)

One of my favourite things Iv'e played since getting into GBStudio. Been in a slump the last few weeks trying to work out what I want to make for my second game, playing this has done wondering for my drive and motivation.

Tis a big inspiration dude, keep up the great work and thanks a bunch.

Glad to hear it! Thank you and good luck :)

Is the cloud hopping after getting all 8 acorns chapter 2? (it currently only has a looping route (with creature that can't be followed) and a suicidal nothing-to-land-on route)

No it will tell you when chapter 2 starts. There is a solution if you use what you learned ;)

it took me a while, the wind spot felt a bit more narrower than the other two I had encountered.

I will rework that whole idea asap. It's all work in progress and my ideas are a little all over the place sometimes. Feedback is always appreciated!

giving old man the GPS before speaking with him has caused the game to lock up.

I had that bug once, can't reproduce it. Don't know how to fix it ლ(ಥ Д ಥ )ლ

Really cool game! I really like the idle animations of the actors, as it makes the scene feel more alive. The font style is interesting, but maybe a bit hard to read. All in all it looks really good so far! ;)

Thank you! I'll try to improve the font a bit, any letters in particular?

I would look into the alignment of the capital and non-capital letters, it seems like they aren't on the same 'level' / height.

The alignment was intentional to make it stand out, but maybe I need to rethink that design choice ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
